What is Viral Content, What is Viral Traffic & What Makes Content Viral?

Quick Review of the How to Make Content Go Viral Web Series

On page one of this series on organic SEO I was only able to discuss how relating to the wants and needs of readers or viewers by evoking emotions from each visitor with unique content that doesn’t make your visitors wait too long for it to load can help you get a high page rank with a first page SERP on the top search engines and be of highly viral quality.

According to the full definition of viral content to the left, I will need to discuss how to easily fulfill readers or viewers needs with great substance in order to create highly viral quality web pages, which will not only help grow a readership or fan base, but improve search engine rank to increase traffic and better your chance to cash in on the reward of viral traffic.

Viral content does not only apply to videos, viral content is a piece of online media whether it be written work such as articles and blogs, or videos, images, widgets, apps, etc., and it does more than just spread as if contagious, starting discussions and passing from person to person suddenly taking the web by storm and becoming an overnight online sensation by getting a quick burst of more traffic in less than 24 hours than the site hosting the webpage has seen in a month (what some Internet marketing gurus call viral traffic).

You can take a look at the research conducted by Jonah Berger and Katherine L. Milkman titled "What Makes Online Content Viral?" that I discussed in part 1 of this organic SEO web series or even do a short personal study on online media being shared by thousands on facebook, Google Plus, Linked In and other social networking platforms taking note of what makes you want to share it, and what will be revealed is that there are several qualities that make content viral. In summary- viral content is online media that connects and relates to the visitors on the webpage who are wanting the media (a target market) by evoking emotions, repeatedly creating a desire to react from each visitor, while at the same time providing fresh, interesting substance that is unique and easily fulfills the need of the reader or viewer in a timely manner.

How to Easily Fulfill Visitor’s Needs

Easily fulfilling your readers or viewers needs can seem to be an impossible task to complete for each individual visitor, yet it can be done, as you can see it happening on facebook, Google plus, Linked In and other social networking platforms you use everyday, with online media such as articles, blogs, videos, images, games, widgets, and apps being liked and shared by thousands. Yet it can only be achieved with organic white hat search engine optimization if you want a high authority page rank, SERP, and have your webpage shared by thousands for the opportunity to grow a readership.

Hence, we should take a look at the web page content you want to go viral, get a first page SERP on the major search engines, and have a high authority page rank to see how easily it fulfills the needs of your target market of customers or audience. Does your unique content look and feel welcoming to your visitors, allowing them to feel as if they can easily obtain and do everything (or more than) the reader or viewer expected or wanted and came to your web page for, including easily discuss, share, and interact? If customers or visitors don't feel welcomed to your page and feel as if they can easily obtain everything they wanted (maybe even discover more then they expected) from your web page they will bounce right off making your bounce rate for your site analytics high which can make it impossible to improve search engine ranking, so lets first take a look at the design of your contents.

Content Layout: Not Just Content Organization, Its Excellent Customer Service, Meeting the Needs of the Target Market for Your E-business

Design or content layout is actually quite important when it comes to attracting more traffic with more leads from a target market to build a following, readership, fan base (or whatever), as well as improve search engine ranking for both the authority rank and placement . Layout can make your substance whether it be an article, blog, vlog, video, images, etc., look and feel welcoming and of high quality or inhospitable and substandard.

Many internet marketers tend to think content layout is simply content organization and again fail to look at the big picture where layout, when well thought out, will provide excellent customer service for the visitors (your customers) making it easy for the reader or viewer to easily find and get what they expected and wanted from your substance, as well as easy to find you to help them learn more about you and the media you produce and/or publish, giving you a better opportunity to build a following or fan base.

Content organization, white space, allowing your readers or viewers to not feel bombarded with a web page full of what customers may deem to be over-advertising and clutter. White space and common sense content organization that helps the viewer easily discover new or unique and interesting things including who produced it, is rather welcoming to customers allowing them to easily find what they came for and easily share or provide feedback by providing each piece of media contained on the page with just the right amount of white space separating it from the rest of the media on the page and placing the media in areas on the page that would make it easy for readers or viewers to discover and share.

Layout of Your Subject Can Help With Explore-ability, Readability, & Site Analytics; Especially When Writing

Since Google is one of the top search engines, and Google's web bot happens to be hypertext based (meaning that it looks at the underlying web site code for the importance of the contents to the subject) there is one more aspect that Google's web crawler is looking for when it crawls your site that is very important for you to know about as it will not only help get your search engine ranking on page one, but it will help with the readability of your subject making it friendlier to both, the top search engines and your audience.

What I'm talking about is the layout of your subject matter. Have you noticed how this article has enlarged, bold words that give you a basic idea of what you are about to read next? Well those are called headings, and not only do they help your reader or viewer fan base know what to expect next but they tell the major search engines’ web bot to factor in it's algorithms the layout of your subject by helping the web bot crawler understand how important to the subject that particular heading is.

Which leads me back to the whole relevancy part that I discussed in part 1 of the web series organic white hat SEO tips, as these headings also need to be relevant to the what the audience of the web page is searching for, you should add some of the key words and key phrases related to your topic and to what your target audience is searching for on the major search engines to each heading you place into your subject matter.

Virality Relies on Evoking Interaction

Evoking interaction is a key to virality, after all, virality is produced by evoking the act of sharing from thousands of people. This is not only where the quality of what you produce or publish is going to have a major influence, as any customer will reject anything of poor quality immediately, which again will factor into your site analytics bounce rate and you can kiss virality goodbye, but also new and unique have major influence as it will be more likely to grab the attention and give you a better chance to evoke interactivity. Thus providing the best quality you can provide in your e-business productions or publications will give any webpage virality and search engine ranking a boost especially if it is unique or new.

Now there is a couple of SEO tools that can help you evoke interactivity on your pages that at very least deserve a quick discussion in these SEO tips, however it's how you use these tools that will inspire more interaction. The SEO tools I'm talking about are widgets such as polls, quizzes, ratings, and the age old html table element. It may be easy to understand how polls, quizzes, and ratings can evoke interactivity, asking opinions can easily evoke an action, however the html table element is not so blatant, providing the customer with a quick review or more detail to the topic allowing the customer to explore the topic easier, giving the customer satisfaction which can lead to sharing their thoughts and other forms of interactivity.

However, as stated in part 1 of this web series evoking interactivity also has to do with evoking emotion and the best way to know if what you have produced or published will evoke any kind of emotion is to test it out to see if it evokes the emotions that are known to evoke interaction such as sharing. There are many ways you can test to see if what you have produced or want to publish will evoke emotion and interaction, some of which are completely free such as having family, friends, co-workers etc. tell you how they felt after reading or viewing what you have produced, and others you may have to pay a fee for, such as paying a survey or research company to do a public survey, which could give you a more unbiased and better idea of the reaction your production or publication will get from the general public. Though the second method gives you the benefit of unbiased criticism the first method may encourage those who you asked the opinions of to share and would be an even greater benefit especially if those you asked opinions of were unbiased in their criticism.
